Introduction

In this Chinese New Holiday, my friend and I started our trip to visit Steam Locomotives in Pingdingshan in Henan Province.  We began on 2 Feb and I finished my trip on 6 Feb, and on 7 Feb I arrived at HK.  However, my friend continued his trip to Zhengzhou until 10 Feb and he returned back to HK on 11 Feb.

As most people know that Pingdingshan is one of the biggest coal mining ore in China.  Nowadays, a lot of steam locomotives can still be seen in this city.  The steam locomotives are used to transport the coal from the ore to the nearby main stations and then delivery it to other cities.

Pingdingshan in Chinese is “平顶山”, and the mountain is flatter on the top.  It contains many many coals inside the mountain.  Steam locomotives are traveling to and fro the mountain and the cities to carry the coals.

During my trip in Pingdingshan, our friend – Mr. Chiu showed us around there.  Mr. Chiu is a local, who is also a specialist on Steam locomotives in China.  Therefore, we can easily find different types of Steam locomotives, like QJ, JS and SY.  Besides, we can also visit the depot in this area.  Another attractive activity was traveling on the Steam locos from one point to another.  Luckily, we were invited to get on the cab of QJ, JS and SY respectively.  The drivers were very friendly and they explained a lot to us about the driving techniques.

The temperature in that region is varied ranging from 5°C to –5°C.  Also, the weather was fine with clear blue sky, especially on the 4 Feb.  It was extremely suitable for taking photos under such conditions.

Our trip is summarized briefly as follows:

Day 1

We travelled the train T68 from Shenzhen to Wuchang, and arrived at Wuchang on the next day morning.

Day 2

Took photos in Wuchang in the morning and went to Louhe in the afternoon, stayed at Louhe until next day.

Day 3

This morning, we took the train at 8:30am to Pingdingshan.   At about 10:00am, we reached Pingdingshan and went to a Hotel.  In the afternoon, we took photos in the depot and we walked along the railway track to find the Steam engines.

Day 4

Took photos whole day.

Day 5

That morning, we went to Xuchang to see the narrow gauge (762mm) railway.  I travelled T89 (from Shijiazhuang to Guangzhou) to Guangzhou at 4:30pm.  But Kelvin continued his trip to Zhengzhou.

Day 6

As the train was delayed for 3 hours, I arrived at Guangzhou at 11:00am!
