(按这看相片;day4a.htm)

Day 4 : 05-Feb-2003

Today, we continued our “mission”.  We started our trip at 9:30am and we walked to the nearby station and saw two QJs and one JS.  One QJ was carrying coal to the west direction and the others were in shunting.

(Click here to see the photos!  day4a.htm)

We then walked eastward along the track to find the steam engines.  This morning, a lot of steam engines were seen and most of them are JS.  Sometimes, QJ and SY were seen occasionally.

An hour later, we entered a shunting area.  A lot of wagons carrying coal were seen and they were waiting for their “heads” to haul them to their destinations.  JS and SY were frequently seen as shunting engines.

(Great photos here! day4b.htm)

After we had had our lunch, we entered the shunting area and continued photo-shooting to the steam engines.  After a while, a SY 758 stopped by us.  The drivers asked us to get on their engine, and we were invited again to travel from one place to another.  The chief drivers said that he had driven the loco for over 30 years!!  Many Steam locos had been seen before, like SL, RM, and YJ etc.  However, they were faded out.

The loco was shaking like earthquake while it was in motion, but we all enjoyed the traveling in SY for almost half an hour.  The engine was very new and the vice driver explained a lot to us.  One most important information was the difference between using the “gas horn” and electric horn”.  When the “gas horn” was used??  According to the drivers, when you want warn the people on the track who are far away from the loco.  However, electric horn was used when the people on the track are close to the engine.

My last visite to Guangzhou steel works was in April 2002, I found that the “gas horn” in the steam engine was completely removed because of the noise pollution.  We all enjoyed listening to the “gas horn” when it was in use.

When we got off the SY 758, we hoped we could travel on the gigantic monster – QJ.  Luckily, an QJ 7186, (6 axles tender) stopped beside us.  We went to ask the drives whether we could get on their engine.   Luckily, we were invited!!  The QJ 7186 had no “ear”, the smoke deflector.  We asked the driver why this QJ has no “ear”.  They said that the ear block their views when the loco was in boiler forward, so they removed them.  Without the pair of “ears”, the QJ looked like a JS.

The size of the cab was bigger than that of JS and SY.  Now there were 7 people inside the cab.  Besides the driver and the vice driver, there were also two staff and three of us.  One was responsible for adding coal to the boiler and the other was responsible for hook-connecting and disconnecting when the locos were hauled or released the wagons.

We talked to the drivers and the staff in a happy atmosphere.  Although the working environment was dirty, they still worked happily.  Finally, they drove us to one station and we said good-bye to them.

We all enjoyed the day very much and then returned to hotel.
